Lagoon islands

The Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta stands at the heart of the island of Torcello and boasts a splendid mosaic in Venetian-Byzantine style, depicting the Last Judgement. The floor, decorated using the same technique, is similar to St Mark's Basilica in terms of beauty and quality.

Connected to the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta by a portico, the church of Santa Fosca is another example of the Veneto-Byzantine style. Built to strengthen the link with the cult of Saints Fosca and Maura, it stands out for a striking play of light and shade inside.

The church of San Pietro Martire is a treasure trove of works of art. In addition to the 'Baptism of Christ' attributed to Tintoretto, visitors can admire the 'Assumption of the Virgin and Eight Saints' and the 'Barbarigo Altarpiece', both creations by Giovanni Bellini. From the church visitors can go to the museum and sacristy, in which are preserved valuable vestments, liturgical vessels and the largest reliquary on the island.

Founded in 1861, the Murano Glass Museum brings together centuries of evidence of glassmaking excellence. Within its spaces, visitors can examine the various phases of glassmaking in the workshops of great masters and retrace the history of magnificent objects, as well as admire them at first hand.

Dating back to the seventh century, the Basilica of Santi Maria e Donato is extraordinary for its marble mosaics and polychrome glass paste used to decorate its floor and walls. Of great impact too is the Vergine Orante, painted in the apsidal basin on a gold ground.

Opened in the premises of the historic school, the Lace Museum aims to reveal and promote this ancient art. Within, it is possible not only to admire pieces of great value, but also to observe the traditional techniques of working the thread live, thanks to the presence of lace-makers in the mornings.

In Piazza Baldassare Galuppi, there is the church of San Martino Vescovo, the only one on the island of Burano. Among the many works inside, one can admire Gian Battista Tiepolo's Crucifixion, which the artist painted during the early years of his career.
